Our Wandering Monk Hermitage

We are humble people living quietly in the serene San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies. We are both elementary public school teachers and devote our time to helping our nation's future leaders. Colorado, with its snow-capped mountains, frequent streams and lakes, abundant trees and open space, call to us. We are happy to call this our home.

Winter starts about the end of October to the middle of April. It can snow after that, too, so we wait to plant delicate annuals and other flowers until June, when spring is still in bloom. Vallecito Lake is a resort village and so many people live in their cabins here only during the summer. Therefore, in the winter, most people have chased the sun back south until another year. This gives us an opportunity for quiet and solitude that we desire. We ski right outside our door and down the many dirt roads meandering around empty houses and streets. We also love to snow-shoe on the Vallecito trail which is not too far from our home. Since we hope to perform search and rescue work with our Alsatian Shepalute, Citara, we have to stay in shape during all kinds of weather conditions. The great thing about winters here in Vallecito is year round there is an average of 300 days of sun. Even in the winter, the cool sun shines through the white clouds to brighten our days.

Our street is filled with helpful neighbors and gently-swaying pines. Last year, we noticed millions of tiny worms dropping on silken thread from the treetops. We soon learned that these worms were Spruce Bud worm and very harmful to our trees. We are sad to say that many trees in our yard are affected and the only hope of having a successfully treed yard is to cut down the old, dying ones and replant.
